Intimidated by Group Classes?
Group classes can be a great environment.
You get energy from the room.
You meet people.
You move more than you would on your own.
For a lot of people, that’s exactly what they need.
But here’s something that doesn’t get said enough in the fitness industry:
Group classes aren’t the right starting point for everyone.
And if you’ve ever felt like you’re not ready yet, there’s a good chance you’re not alone.
The Intimidation Is Real
If you’ve never spent much time in a gym, walking into a room where everyone seems to know what they’re doing can feel overwhelming.
You might be wondering:
- Am I going to be the slowest one here?
- What if I can’t keep up?
- What if I don’t know what the exercises are?
- Is everyone going to notice that I’m struggling?
Even confident people feel this way sometimes.
For someone who hasn’t exercised in years, that feeling can be strong enough to keep them from starting at all.
And that’s the opposite of what fitness should be doing.
When a Customized Plan Makes More Sense
Group classes are designed to work well for most people in the room.
But sometimes what you actually need is something a little more specific.
That might be the case if you:
- Haven’t exercised in a long time
- Feel significantly out of shape
- Have old injuries or physical limitations
- Have a very specific goal (run a Half Marathon)
- Just feel very nervous about jumping into a class environment
A customized program gives you space to learn at your own pace.
You get time to:
- Understand the movements
- Build a base level of strength and conditioning
- Gain confidence in the gym
- Learn how your body responds to exercise
For a lot of beginners, this step makes everything else easier later.
Sometimes the Best First Step Is a Smaller One
One thing we see often at our gym, many Oak Cliff residents who believe they need to “get in shape first” before they can join something like a class.
They’ll say things like:
- “I just need to lose a little weight first.”
- “I should probably get stronger before I try that.”
- “I don’t want to slow everyone else down.”
Ironically, those are often the people who benefit the most from a more personalized starting point.
When someone builds a little confidence and a small fitness base first, group classes start to feel a lot more approachable.
Group Classes Are Still Great
None of this means group classes are bad.
They can be fantastic for:
- Community
- Accountability
- General fitness
- People who enjoy the energy of training with others
For many people, they’re exactly the right fit.
But they’re not the only way to start.
If You’re Feeling Hesitant, That’s Okay
If you’ve been thinking about starting a fitness program but feel like group classes might be a little too much right now, that’s completely normal.
The goal isn’t to throw you into the hardest possible situation.
The goal is to find a starting point that actually works for you.
Sometimes that’s a class.
Sometimes it’s a smaller setting.
Sometimes it’s a customized plan that helps you build the confidence to eventually join the room.
There’s no wrong place to begin.
Only the one that helps you actually get started.
